Coach Derrell Upton was born into a hockey family as the nephew of NHL legend Bernie Nicholls. He began playing hockey at an early age in Toronto, Ontario. At the age of 16, he was drafted into the Ontario Hockey League where he played for four seasons. His professional hockey career began in 2000 at the age of 21 playing for the Lake-Charles Ice Pirates of the WPHL. During six professional seasons he played in Louisiana, Texas, Florida and South Carolina. Throughout 342 professional games, he recorded 88 Goals and 131 Assists for 219 points. It included two seasons as a member of the Fort Worth Brahmas. After his professional career, he began teaching private lessons, which soon led to coaching. He has coached the Birdville ISD Varsity Hockey
