NYTEX to Offer New Concussion Evaluation System for Athletes

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (July 20) -The Texas Brahmas Youth Hockey Association is proud to announce the addition and availability of the IMPACT (Immediate Post- Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) Management Program to their athletes.

IMPACT is the first and most widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. IMPACT is used exclusively by the National Hockey League (NHL), National Football League (NFL) and over 1000 high schools, colleges and minor league professional sports organizations across North America.

“We have utilized IMPACT for several years for our players on the Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League and we feel in today’s evolving field of sports science and for the protection and benefit of our young athletes it is imperative that we safeguard their cognitive development by utilizing a validated system to assist in guiding us in decision making as to the appropriate timing of return to hockey related activity,” said Dr. Salvatore Trazzera, CEO of NYTEX Sports.

“This preventive measure will virtually eliminate the possibility of Second Impact Syndrome, a devastating condition which occurs when a young athlete sustains a second concussion due to premature return to activity,” said Dr. Trazzera.

Dr. Trazzera is the only physician in the State of Texas who holds both USA Hockey Level V Certification and IMPACT training concussion management training. Dr. Trazzera and his medical staff will be attending the advanced IMPACT Certified Concussion Specialist Program (CIC) at the University of Pittsburgh on July 28 and 29th, led by the program’s developers Dr. Mark Lovell, Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Mickey Collins.

“We are excited and proud to offer a valuable service which we have used for our professional players to our youth hockey organization. Our commitment to availing these advanced resources to our young players to help achieve their potential as hockey players and as student athletes should provide our parents with the peace of mind that we view their children’s safety of paramount importance,” said Ron Vogel, Vice President of the Texas Brahmas Youth Hockey Association.

PEE WEE 2000 COACHES UNVEILED

Wearing the whistles for the upcoming 2011-12 Jr. Brahmas season for the Pee Wee 2000 will be Head Coach Joey Bastien and Assistant Coaches James Frye and Jeremy Law

Bastien is no stranger to the Jr. Brahmas staff as he was Head Coach for the Midget Major AA in 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. Last season, Bastien led his team to the semifinals in the NTXHL Playoffs. Prior to joining the Brahmas, the Edmonton, ALTA native was the Assistant  Coach for the varsity and JV teams (2008-09) before taking the reins as Head JV Coach in 2009-10. His first introduction in high school hockey came in 2001 and 2002 where he was the Assistant Coach for the Varsity hockey squad at Kamiakin High School (WA).

Success followed Bastien from on the ice to behind the bench as he played eight solid seasons of professional hockey (UHL, CHL and Norwegian Elite League) from 2001-08. Bastien has proven to be a ‘true Brahma’ since his playing days with the Brahmas in 2003-2005. In 2007, Bastien hung up his skates and exchanged them for a whistle. He and his wife Leah and son Jett reside in Fort Worth.

Please check www.jrbrahmas.com soon for future announcements regarding the new Jr. Brahmas coaching staff.
